  1. Swapping a 99 4R70W from a 4.2L to 5.0L engine are there any modifications needed.

  2. What is the purpose of the EPC on a 4R70W transmission.

  3. I have a 95 Mustang GTS with a 98 Explorer 4R70w and a SCT Chip Programmed for the 4R70w I am planning on swapping gears for better 60ft times which gear would be better 4.10 or 3.73's I dont want to go with too much gear because I drive this car daily. It is 300RWHP and its N/A.

  4. How do you remove the front pump from the transmission? Does it require tapping holes and using a slide hammer?

  5. I am swapping out my aod in my 92' mustang in favor of an aode. My question is do I have to shorten my driveshaft for this to fit? Also, what size cooler should I use with a 3000stall converter? Thanks, Tom

  6. I have a '69 Mustang with a 420hp 480tq 351W stroker motor. I'm currently running a stock FMX and 3.70:1 Trac-Lok rearend. I want to upgrade to OD but unsure which way to go. AOD, AODE, 4R70W?!?! Ease of install and price are a major factor also.

  7. I have a 97 F150 with a 4R7oW transmission. In reverse and 1st gear it is making a grinding noise. I pulled that pan and noticed some very small pieces of metal in the pan. Am I looking at a rebuild? It shifts all the gears fine it just sounds rough in 1st and reverse. Thanks in advance.

  8. How can you tell the difference between a '97 and '98 4R70w transmissions?

  9. i was wondering how much does a 94 gt transmission weigh

  10. I have a 1994 Ford T-Bird 4.6 V-8. When on the highway at 50 mph and on up in o.d., it will periodically down shift into 3rd for a few seconds then go back into o.d..It may do this a couple times and then not do it again for a week or more, but it always peiodically does this. It has always been well maintained and not abused. The fluid is always clean. No codes come up in the computer and the o.d. off light dosnt come on. What could cause this? Thanks!

  1. Swapping a 99 4R70W from a 4.2L to 5.0L engine are there any modifications needed.

No modifications are needed for the transmission to bolt to the engine. Depending on the vehicle you will be using this transmission in with the 5.0 engine, there may be some changes that will need to be made to the wiring or shift linkage on the transmission.

  2. What is the purpose of the EPC on a 4R70W transmission.

The EPC (Electronic Pressure Control) sends hydraulic pressure to the boost valve in the valve body to increase line pressure. The computer is able to vary EPC pressure to increase line pressure for changing driving conditions. When more load is placed on the drivetrain, more pressure is required to keep the clutches in the transmission from slipping.

The 3.73 gears would be your best bet. You already have an 18 percent lower first gear with the 4R70W, and if you combine that with 4.10 rear gears it may just turn into a tire smoker. If you run on slicks you would probably see better performance with the 4.10 gears, but I doubt the increase in performance would be very substantial.

If you haven't already installed a performance torque converter I would also recommend a Precision Industries Stallion torque converter. I have seen as much as 5 tenths of a second improvement in 60 foot times just by going from a factory torque converter to the Precision Industries torque converter.

  4. How do you remove the front pump from the transmission? Does it require tapping holes and using a slide hammer?

Two of the bolt holes are already tapped with 3/8" threads. The correct procedure is to use two slide hammers to pull on both threaded holes at the same time until the pump is free.

The need to shorten the driveshaft actually varies from car to car. You will have to install the transmission before you can be sure. The position of the rear end, is the biggest factor. Sometimes this is changed by aftermarket control arms and suspension adjustment. I would get the L4 Cooler from our website. With a 3000 RPM conveter I would go with the biggest cooler.

I always recommed the electronic transmissions. You would have to invest a good deal of money to get the AOD to be as durable as the AODE or 4R70W, and the AOD would still not come close to the driveability that can be obtained with the AODE or 4R70W transmission. Check out our TCS with The Full Harness for the easiest installation of an electronic transmission. Also don't miss the page that details the full harness and all of its connections.

If you have a grinding noise and metal in the pan, you can count on a rebuild.

  8. How can you tell the difference between a '97 and '98 4R70w transmissions?

There should be a rectangular tag on the side of the case. You will find a few numbers there. One of the numbers should be 4 characters and start with F7 or F8. The letter F stands for the Decade of the 90's and the next digit is the last number of the model year. The third character tells what vehicle it is for, and the last character just means it is a powertrain part. F7 is a 1997 model and F8 is a 1998 Model. For example a 1997 mustang transmission tag would be F7ZP. F for the 90's, 7 because it is a 97 model, Z means it is from a mustang, and P means it is a powertrain part. Just for reference some other vehicle designations are T for Truck, U for Van, S for Thunderbird, and L for Mark VIII.

  9. i was wondering how much does a 94 gt transmission weigh

The AODE transmission with a full size torque converter weights 180 pounds. The stock converter weighs about 40 pounds.

Your transmission range sensor could be the issue. See the other FAQ about this for more detail.
