  6. I have a 1990 Lincoln Mark VII. I am planning an engine swap to a highly modified 351W. Will a 4R70W fit my vehicle? Will I have to do much modification to transmission mounts, driveshaft, etc. for this installation?

  1. Should I replace my pressure plate with a steel from the clutch pack to give me room to add extra clutches to my clutch drum?

This is not a good idea. The pressure plate is thicker than the steels so that it does not bend. The rigidity of the pressure plate helps keep the clutches and steels flat against each other to maintain maximum contact area. If the top plate is thin, and it can bend then the inside area of the fricitions can have less pressure applied to them, and decrease holding force.

  2. Should I cut down my clutch apply piston to install more clutches in my direct drum?

I have seen this suggested elsewhere online, and I don't think it will hurt the apply piston, however I do have a word of caution to offer. If you are going to do this, first you must determine how much can be cut before the steel closest to the piston bottoms out in the splines in the drum. To do this put one steel in the drum without the apply piston installed, and then measure the depth from the top of the drum to the steel. Next install the apply piston and one steel and measure the depth from the top of the piston to the steel again. The difference in these two measurements is the amount you can cut from the apply piston without creating a gap between the apply piston and the steel. I have found this amount to be around .015" to .020". Cutting more material than the reading you get will not allow any extra room for frictions since the steel has already bottomed in the drum splines, it will just create a gap between the apply piston and the steel. I have seen cutting as much as .100" from the piston being suggested, and while this may be possible with some drum and piston combinations, you should always check first.

  3. What is the shifter Pattern for the AODE?

The shifter pattern for the AODE and 4R70W is Park, Reverse, Neutral, Overdrive, Second, and Low. Drive is accomplished by pressing the OD cancel switch. If the OD cancel switch is pressed then the transmission won't shift past third gear with the shifter in OD, effectively making OD Drive.

  4. What is the fluid capacity of the AODE or 4R70W?

It varies depending on the application, but it generally runs between 12 and 13 quarts. This is if the transmission is completely empty. If the converter is an aftermarket smaller diameter style this will decrease the fluid capacity by around 3 quarts, so be careful if this is the case. You usually only lose about 5 quarts of fluid if you just drop the pan.

At full throttle it will hit the rev limiter before it shifts into 2nd. You will have to lift off the accelerator to get it to shift into 2nd gear. Installation of our Baumannator TCS will solve your problem, and allow you to use any gear ratio you choose.

The 4R70W will fit your vehicle. We sell a backset transmission crossmember that will handle the extra 7/8" length of the 4R70W. You may need to shorten the driveshaft to accomodate the extra length. You should be able to use your factory Mark VII shifter with a cable from an AODE or 4R70W equipped application with a floor shifter like a Thunderbird or Mustang.

  7. i would like to install a shift kit in my 2000 mustang gt. could you tell me if i have an 'aod' or an 'aode'. What kit would you reccomend, and what is the cost?

You have the AODE, or more appropriately the 4R70W. Ford's current term for the transmission in your 2000 Mustang is 4R70W. All 1996-2004 automatic transmission equipped Mustangs use the 4R70W regardless of the engine type. You would need the RK-AODE-2 valve body recalibration kit. For pricing see the AODE product section of our baumann electronic controls website.

  8. I have a 1992 Ford Crown Vic with the AODE. It is just a basic commuter. The transmission is failing. I would like to know if I could replace it with the AOD, or does it ahve to be the AODE. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If it is equipped with the AODE you could not replace it with the regular AOD without changing the engine. The AOD was only made with the Windsor bolt pattern and will not bolt up to your modular 4.6 liter AODE equipped vehicle. The 4.6 liter AOD combination is actually an odd setup that involves a 4.6 liter engine specially made with a 302 bolt pattern. Even if the swap could be made there are a number of other reasons you wouldn't want to do it. First, the AODE is a much better transmission than the AOD. Second, you would need to adapt a TV cable and linkage to the vehicle, and ensure it worked properly or risk transmission damage. Third, the AOD transmission is shorter so you would need a longer driveshaft. Lastly, the 1992 crown vic equipped with the AODE uses one computer to run the engine and the transmission, and if you disconnect the transmission from the Powertrain computer it will probably cause some driveability problems with the engine.

  9. Would a 2002 4R70W work with your tcs and wiring harness?

Yes, you can use the TCS and our full harness with a 2002 4R70W. The only modification you will need to make is to switch the Output Shaft Speed Sensor to a 2000 and earlier Output Shaft Speed Sensor. This sensor is available from Ford, and costs around $20.00.

The only modifications necessary for that power level would be to install our RK-AODE valve body recalibration kit.
