Why does my TCS shift very hard at light throttle and shift correctly at other throttle positions?

If this happens, it is likely an incorrectly programmed base TPS value. Base TPS for the TCS is NOT the idle TPS value. The correct base TPS is .12 volts below idle. The TCS uses this value to determine if there is a problem with the TPS. If TPS voltage falls below the base TPS voltage, then the TCS will enter a default operation mode where line pressure is always full and all shift decisions are made at cell five. Why does "eL" or "eH" display in the range or fluid temperature window of the system monitor?

These are error indicators. "eL" means the voltage is lower than any acceptable reading and "eH" means the voltage is higher than any acceptable reading. This is most likely a wiring or sensor related problem.

Why doesn't my torque converter clutch engage until after I have driven for a few miles?

The torque converter clutch will not come on until the transmission fluid temperature has reached 100 degrees F. This is done to protect the lining of the converter clutch which can be damaged by engaging when the fluid is cold.

Why does my torque converter not engage at all?

Check to make sure you have a temperature reading in the systems monitor display at the bottom of the TCS tuning software window. If the display reads "eL" or "eH", then you have an error condition that could be caused by wiring problems or a bad transmission fluid temperature (TFT) sensor. Since the minimum temperature for the converter clutch to turn on cannot be verified by the TCS, the clutch will not operate.

My range sensor and fluid temperature sensor read "eH" or "eL" and my transmission doesn't shift at all or not at the right time. What could cause this?

In an AODE or 4R70W application, pins 2 and 17 coming from the TCS harness must be soldered together, connected to the gray wire with the red stripe coming from the transmission harness, and then run to sheet metal near battery negative or the EEC ground. This completes the circuit for the sensors in the transmission. If this is not done, the three sensors that work off this ground (OSS, MLPS, TFT) will be floating and read incorrectly. Without the correct output shaft speed (OSS) sensor reading, the transmission will not shift properly.

Why does my transmission shift at a higher RPM than I programmed it to at full throttle?

The electronics in the TCS react instantly, but the hydraulics have some delay. Once a shift solenoid is switched, the passage that it controls must either fill or drain. The time it takes to fill or drain the passage is what accounts for this lag between the programmed shift point and the actual full throttle shift point. Converter slip also factors into this difference in programmed and actual shift points. The difference is usually around 500 RPMs, so plan to subtract about 500 RPMs from your programmed WOT shift point.

Why does my transmission, equipped with the TCS, shift in manual low?

This is completely normal. The TCS has a programmable upshift and downshift safety for manual low. It is available in the Options - System Setup menu in the lower left-hand corner of the window. For more information, see TCS tuning tips.

Why does current gear read "1" in Park, Reverse, and Neutral?

The TCS does not schedule shifts in Park, Reverse, or Neutral; therefore, it always defaults to 1st gear in these cases. This minimizes the delay when initially shifting into the OD range.

Why doesn't the transmission range indicator on the system monitor change when I press the OD cancel switch?

The range display simply indicates the physical position of the shifter. The OD cancel switch tells the processor not to shift into OD, but since the shifter is still in the OD range, the display will still read OD.

The green light on my TCS doesn't come on in any gear range, but I get a red light in manual 2nd. What could cause this?

This condition usually indicates an open shift solenoid two connection. The transmission harness has two wires that are purple with an orange stripe. One of these wires is shift solenoid two and the other is backup light power. Insure that you have the correct wire connected to each.

Your installation manual mentions checking the resistance of the converter clutch solenoid for the AODE. Is this check necessary for the E4OD?

It is not necessary to test the converter clutch solenoid on an E4OD. There is only one type of converter solenoid for the E4OD.
