  1. I just rebuilt my AOD and it has no reverse when selected. The forward gears seem fine but I have not driven the car yet and I cant seem to select first gear. It goes P N R D 3 2 and then no further, any ideas guy's? Cheers Steve.

  2. I have aod in 87 crown victoria with low miles and good maintenance. I noticed at first if drove in drive had only 1st and 2nd at any speed and with normal shifting speed for 1-2. The problem is that it just would not go into third. I tried to use in OD but still would not go into third and at I think about 40mph would seem to just rev up, but when I would change to d for drive position would go back to 2nd and operate normally except would not go into 3rd. I pulled pan and found no metal or contaminant but changed fluid and filter. It drove the same. I then found that tv rod to transmission had fallen out at top. I learned about the Ford recall service buletin and found the original plastic retainer for the rod had broken causing the rod to drop out at fuel injection throtle body. I replaced it with the Ford brass retainer kit and it was still the same. Went through the basic rod adjustment and still the same Symptoms which have not changed since began so I don't use car. help!

  3. I have a 88 mustang aod and a holley carb.everything works fine but the accelerator is extreemly hard to push.with the tv cable disconnected pedel moves easy, is there anyway to help this?what is the normal force required to pull the TV cable to WOT ?

  4. i have a 88 stang that was a 4 cyl and i have just put in a 302 with aod trans out of a mark IIV. it has a eddlebrock carb on it. i am having trouble getting it out of first gear. what could cause this to happen?

  5. Hello My 1985 GT has 67,000 miles on it. It began to over-rev in first into second, with a giant BANG into second gear. I had the throttle valve pressure adjusted, and now it shifts quickly, with a big bang into second, and an immediate shift to third after that. It still has a harder than normal 1-2 shift. What can I do? Thanks Bill

  6. i have a 87 mustang gt auto and i changed the rearend ratio last year to 3.73 now i went for a long ride in her and i smelt something burning when i stopped she locked up on me i gave her a shot of gas and she popped and when on like ususal but only now there was like a clicking noise in the trans somewhere. now the car locks up when in reverse sometimes she come out of lock but when you pick up speed in say drive the noise goes away but no speed the motor over revs but no power or speed after say 30 mph now my question is. What is wrong with my transmission someone told me that my torque converter could have gave up but i still thinks it is my transmission any help in my delemia thanks?

I'm guessing you are using an aftermarket shifter. The AOD doesn't have as many selector positions as you are trying to get. The AOD shifter pattern is P R N OD D L. There is no manual second or third. See the AOD shifter FAQ

Sort out the shift linkage and shifter first before doing anymore troubleshooting on the Reverse circuit as linkage adjustment could be effecting the reverse circuit.

Once your shifter is set up correctly if reverse still doesn't work then you would need to make sure the low reverse band and servo were properly installed. The manual valve in the valve body sends pressure to the reverse clutch and reverse band. The manual valve is the one that moves when you move the shifter, so the valve should not be stuck since you can move the shifter. You can remove the valve body to remove and check the reverse servo piston for damaged seals. Also make sure the cover for the reverse servo piston was reinstalled during reassembly. If you don't find any problems with the Low Reverse servo, and the low reverse band is installed properly then the problem is likely in your reverse clutch. One problem that is possible is if the check ball is missing from the reverse clutch piston. The reverse clutch piston could also have a bad or missing seal.

It sounds like you may have damaged your direct clutch. Due to the lack of clutch material in the pan, there is also the possibility that your direct input shaft has broken. The direct input shafts tend to break very cleanly and leave no metal behind to be found in the pan. For details see the FAQ about losing third and fourth gears in the AOD

It should move relatively easily because with the engine running fluid pressure actually assists the travel of the TV valve. The TV plunger could be binding, making movement difficult, but I would say the cable would be more likely. Try disconnecting the lever at the transmission and moving the transmission TV lever by hand. If it is easy to move by hand at the transmission, then the bind is in your cable.

It sounds like your TV cable is either disconnected or improperly adjusted. See our AOD TV linkage adjustment page for instructions.

It may have a sticking 1-2 accumulator valve in the valve body. This would cause a very harsh 1-2 shift while all other shifts would remain normal.

It sounds like your transmissions gear train has been damaged. The 1987 AOD had poor lubrication to the planetary gears. The factory updated the 1988 and later transmissions with a revised output shaft that provided extra lube to the geartrain. Changing the rear gears caused the transmission to turn more RPMs at any given speed and accelerated the damage to the gear train from the poor lube flow. I would suggest getting a 1989 or later transmission core and building it for your car. I suggest going with the 1989 because even though the rear lube output shaft update was done in 1988 some early 1988 transmissions still have the older style output shaft.
