  1. My AOD shifts and works fine 1st through 3rd, but has lost overdrive, what could cause this?

  2. I have lost third and fourth gear in my AOD what could cause this?

  3. My AOD works fine in Park, Reverse, and Neutral, and will move forward in OD, D, and Low, but is always in first gear, what could cause this?

  4. I just put an 85 AOD transmission in a 1995 F150. My linkage is correct and I have Park, Reverse, and Neutral, but when I go to Drive, 2, or 1, it wont shift out of first gear. What should I do? There was a plug on top of the transmission when I pulled it out of the 85 Ford, what does that do?

  5. I think i have a stuck shift valve. My aod will not shift into od. It does not slip just won't get the last gear. How can I fix this?

  6. I have installed an AOD in my 86 stang. the tranny works reverse, neutral, and first. When I take off it stay's stuck in first. When I put it in drive and take off it works only first gear. when I let off the throttle then the RPMs just fall off. When I try to rev the engine it doesn't grab the next gear. same with OD. When I changed the oil filter it came with two square gaskets for the filter inlet to trans. I only installed one, could that have anything to do with my problems? Also I installed a after market TV cable from lokar for my carbed setup and adjusted the slack as needed. just thought that my give you a little idea of my setup. Let me know what I can do. Thanks for the help.

  7. I JUST GOT MY AOD TRANS REBUILT AT A TECH SCHOOL NOW IT WILL NOT SHIFT 3-4 ONLY 1-2 WITH GUAGE AND TOOL I HAVE 0-PSIG AT IDLE 30-PSIG GUAGE IN PLACE I'VE TRYED MOVING PSIG UP AND DOWN 5-PSIG WOULD YOUR VALVE BODY KIT HELP THANKS MIKE

  8. I have used your rk for aod. my question is on the cutback elimination, im wearing the sealing rings (sides) on the pump. could this be because of too much pressure at cruise speeds due to no cutback in pressure.

  9. I have a 1993 Mustang GT the transmission works fine except it seems to struggle a little bit to get from 3rd into Overdrive is there anything I can do to fix this.

  10. I have a 1990 Mercury Grand Marquis and it won't shify into o/d. It works great in low speed or reverse, but whenit should shift to o/d, th eengine revs, but th car stll moves forward, but not with full torque. Is it a sensor or valve or whatever problem? The tranny was just recently serviced. Thanks

  1. My AOD shifts and works fine 1st through 3rd, but has lost overdrive, what could cause this?

The two most likely possibilities are an overdrive band problem, or a stuck 3-4 shift valve. If the overdrive band is worn, when the transmission shifts into overdrive it will neutral out and start to rev freely, but not accelerate the vehicle. If the servo that applies the band is stuck or has badly damaged seals the symptoms will be the same.

If the 3-4 shift valve is stuck, then the transmission will not shift into overdrive, but will not neutral out. The transmission will continue to pull in 3rd gear with no slippage.

  2. I have lost third and fourth gear in my AOD what could cause this?

If your transmission shifts from first to second, seems to hold second longer than normal, and then finally neutrals out completely at the point where it would normally shift to OD then the most likely cause is a damaged Direct Clutch Pack. This would require transmission removal and disassembly to repair. The Direct Clutch pack is the last one to come out of the transmission during disassmebly, so plan on a complete overhaul while it is apart. You may also want to upgrade your direct clutch using raybestos blues, or the alto direct clutch pack kit as listed in our AODE Product Section. Another possible cause of the same symptoms is a broken direct input shaft. We also offer an upgraded version of this shaft.

  3. My AOD works fine in Park, Reverse, and Neutral, and will move forward in OD, D, and Low, but is always in first gear, what could cause this?

There are a few common causes for this. The first is a disconnected or missing TV linkage. If the TV linkage is disconnected the transmission should default to full TV pressure which will make the transmission shift as if it were at Wide Open Throttle all the time. It is also possible that the TV valve in the valve body is stuck in the high pressure position. The easiest way to see if this is the case is to perform a TV pressure test as shown on our TV Linkage Adjustment Page.

Keep in mind when installing the Lokar TV cable with a carburetor, or when making your own TV linkage it is possible to push the TV valve in further than the factory cable allowed. If you are using a valve body with some mileage on it there may be enough of a ridge from the original range of travel to cause the TV valve to get stuck when it travels past the ridge.

You could also have a stuck governor, or a stuck 1-2 shift valve. If the governor is sticking it will cause a delayed, or no upshift, depending on how bad the condition causing the sticking is. If the 1-2 shift valve is stuck, and will not stroke, the transmission will not shift out of first gear.

The plug on the top of the transmission is the backup lamp and neutral safety switch. It sounds like you don't have a TV cable hooked to the transmission. If the TV cable is not connected the transmission will default to full TV pressure. If TV pressure is full shifts will only occur at the wide open throttle shift point, which is usually around 4900 RPM. This means that even at light throttle you would have to get to 4900 RPM to get a 1-2 shift. If you do have the TV linkage connected, you will need to put a pressure gauge on the TV port to make sure the TV pressure varies properly with throttle position.

  5. I think i have a stuck shift valve. My aod will not shift into od. It does not slip just won't get the last gear. How can I fix this?

It is most likely a stuck 3-4 shift valve. Fixing this would involve removing the valve body and freeing the valve. This condition could also be caused by high TV pressure, but if this were the case shift timing would be effected causing your upshifts to be late. We do offer new valve bodies for the AOD if you would rather replace it than try to repair it.

The most likely cause for your problem is a stuck TV valve. Often during the adjustment procedure of the aftermarket TV cable the TV valve inside the transmission gets pushed in farther than the factory cable would allow. This causes the TV valve to stick in the high pressure position even when the linkage returns to the idle position. The easiest way to tell if this is your problem is to check the TV pressure as described in our TV linkage adjustment page.

The valve body kit is intended to modify a properly functioning transmission, not to repair a problem. Refer to AOD valve body kit FAQ # 1. Assuming the transmission shifts 1-2 and then stays in second gear without ever neutralling out the most likely cause would be a stuck 2-3 shift valve in the valve body.

  8. I have used your rk for aod. my question is on the cutback elimination, im wearing the sealing rings (sides) on the pump. could this be because of too much pressure at cruise speeds due to no cutback in pressure.

I have never know this to be a problem with our kit installed. I have had transmission with our AOD Kit go 200,000 miles and more.

The rings on the front pump are for the forward and reverse clutch packs. The reverse clutch (larger diameter sealing rings) is actually fed with boosted pressure, and was never effected by cutback. If these rings are wearing, your reverse boost circuit could have a problem, but since so little time is spent in reverse I doubt those are worn. The forward clutch is always fed with uncut line pressure in first and second gears, and originally is effected by cutback in third gear. In fourth gear the forward clutch is not engaged and is therefore subject to no line pressure.

The only time the rings are under more pressure with our kit installed is in third gear. If you want to see if you have a problem with your boost circuit perform a line pressure test. It should not go over 200 PSI at full throttle. Finally, when these rings are wearing it is often due to damage or wear in the ring grooves on the stator support that they ride in.

  9. I have a 1993 Mustang GT the transmission works fine except it seems to struggle a little bit to get from 3rd into Overdrive is there anything I can do to fix this.

If the transmission has always done this you may be able correct it with our valve body kit alone, or maybe the valve body kit and the A+ Overdrive servo. If this is a newly developed problem it is probably a sign that your overdrive band is beginning to fail.

It is most likely a slipping OD band. Before the band completely fails, it may provide some drive at a reduced torque like you are noticing. Also refer to the FAQ about losing overdrive.
