Section 10: General Advice for Transmission Novices

While automatic transmission build-ups are generally considered to be in the "Don't Try This at Home" category, many adventurous people have done so and succeeded. A good aftermarket transmission overhaul manual or a Ford shop manual, along with the proper tools, are a must.

If you plan to pursue your own automatic buildup, be sure that you carefully study the proper section of your shop manual. Without such information, you are unlikely to succeed. Plan ahead before beginning the project or enlist the help of an expert if necessary. If you are new to automatic transmissions, it would be advisable to allow plenty of time for any unexpected problems. Inspect every piece carefully and replace any suspicious components. One thing that we cannot overemphasize is the importance of cleanliness. Just one piece of debris can sabotage your best efforts.

Less adventurous individuals should find a shop with proven technical capabilities to do the deed for them. Make sure that the technician understands the modifications and the reason that they are being performed. Many shops are understandably hesitant to guarantee high performance work, but they should at least ensure that it will leave their establishment working properly. If you do not feel comfortable with these options, we can either build a transmission for you or refer you to someone in your area who can.
